The first of the pair of naive pen ink and watercolour 18th century ships portraits. The attention to detail conveys the artists knowledge of the sea, the vessels and the events including people, rigging, banners, flags, and script which reads: “His Majesty’s Ship Queen Charlotte of 100 Guns Earl Howe Vice Admiral of England & Commander in Chief of the British Fleet in the Channel1794”. While it is unusual for naive artworks of this nature and period (a work on paper) to survive without significant deterioration, these two works remain in wonderful condition. These naive artistic remembrances are simple and direct, while their detail and text help the author to tell and preserve their story for future generations. Capturing the significance the artist must have felt about the events and their place in history. Both paintings in period matching ebonized frames.
