Artist: Attributed to Arno Breker- German, 1900-1991
Title: Eagle
This powerful work isattributed to the German sculptor Arno Breker.
The compact tension of the crouching eagle mounted upon the wheelof progress, expresses the tension, energy and power of the German ideals ofthat period. It is not difficult to see how this image would be embraced by theGerman government at this point in time. But its sleek stylized form exhibitscharacteristics of the art deco period of the period. Breker isbest known for the work he produced in Nazi Germany, which was endorsed by theauthorities as the antithesis of degenerate art during this period of upheaval.Much of his work at this time were public commissions, as he was made theofficial state sculptor , and exempted from military service during the war.Much has been written about, hist life and accomplishments, while 90 percent ofhis work was destroyed during the war.
