An early-to-mid 18th C German antique salt glazed stoneware jug, from Westerwald, Germany.
This early stoneware jug is impressed with a large circular medallion embossed with initials "GR" (Georgius Rex) beneath a crown and surrounded by a symmetric series of vines with budding flora and fauna. All within ‘sgraffito’ work further accentuated by a dark cobalt blue glaze. Its reeded neck sits above a bulbous body and has an applied strap handle.
Made for the English market, these jugs enjoyed great popularity during the reigns of King George I (1714-1727) and King George II(1727-1760) Georgius Rex (GR) is Latin for King George.
