Late Regency Chinoiserie Pen work Box, Circa 1830.
A black and white octagonal ladies work box, decorated withchinoiserie penwork designs which depicts two seated figures which appear to beplaying cards under the canopy of trees. The figures are centred within aframework of undulating leaf fronds. The elegance and beauty of the black andwhite composition only serves to emphasise the skills
and abilities of itscreator. Penwork was an art form frequently practiced by women in the early19th century, from 1815 to 1850. Much like the cross-stitch samplers and otherskills which we associate with that period. The box retains its original red lacquer interior and is elevated uponsmall brass 'ball' feet.
